Titus Livy recounted in his History of Rome (XXII-15) how Fabius Maximus sent his lieutenant Minutius to the gorge of Terracina, where the mountains descended to the sea and from which the Appian Way could be easily reached, to cut off Hannibal during the Second Punic War.
Francisco Pradilla Ortiz portrayed this scenery of Latium during his last stay in Italy.
