This drawing is part of a cycle on the life of St. Francis of Assisi created for the cloister of the Convent of Jesus and Mary -vulgo de San Francisco el Grande- in Madrid, around 1788. Antonio Carnicero, Zacarías González Velázquez and Manuel de la Cruz also participated in this project. A total of 31 canvases on the life of the saint were preserved and now belong to the Museo del Prado after the absorption of the funds of the Museo de la Trinidad.
