Lluís Martí Gras trained at the Llotja School with Antoni Caba and José Ruiz Blasco. He was awarded a scholarship by the Sant Jordi Academy in 1908 and worked mainly in portraiture, a genre in which he was able to express a combination of sobriety and technical virtuosity. In this sketch, he rehearses his self-portrait in front of a barely sketched canvas.
